The Aftercare Ritual for the Deepest Stain Possible

The Aftercare Ritual for the Deepest Stain Possible

We sometimes joke that we apply forty percent of the mehndi and the bride must finish the other sixty percent at home. That is aftercare — and it is decisive.

The First Six Hours

Do not touch, scratch, or dab the paste. Keep hands warm — wrap loosely with cotton if you are in air conditioning. Do not use the lemon-sugar mixture our grandmothers taught us; it lifts the paste prematurely and dulls the final colour.

Removing the Paste

After at least eight hours (overnight is ideal), scrape — never wash — the paste off with the back of a butter knife. Immediately seal the design with a thin layer of mustard or eucalyptus oil and avoid water for as long as you can manage. The stain will deepen for 48 hours after removal. Trust the process.
